I think I've managed to solve my own problem. I opened the ExtendScript Toolkit app, launched InDesign, and ran the following short script:

Once the custom range is created for a composite font, World Tools Pro can edit it normally.

Just to be clear, the premade ranges are doing the exact same thing that they do in Illustrator. I had to define a custom range there to get the correct behavior, so it's Adobe's definition of "Roman" that's missing the with-macron versions. (odd, since they're usually more common in Japanese romanization than the with-circumflex versions that do render correctly)

Manual import would be sufficient, if you can figure out that process at some point. Most of my projects don't mix romanized text and kanji this way.

We simplified the UI a bit to use premade unicode ranges, so custom ranges cannot really be done in World Tools.

If the premade ranges are not working correctly we definitely want to fix it.

Importing composite fonts should be possible manually, but that's probably not a straight-forward process, and I'm on vacationn right now, so I don't have the time to look into it at the moment.

I'm getting an incorrect substitution when I create a composite font. With the Kanji and Kana ranges set to Kozuka Mincho Pro, and the Roman, Punctuation, Numbers, and Symbols set to, say, Minion Pro, some accented characters are set in Kozuka instead of Minion. Specifically, ō and ū. In Illustrator's composite font editor, there's a Custom button that lets you add your own mappings, but this doesn't appear to be possible in World Tools Pro (v2.0.6, with InDesign CS 5.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.8).

Adobe's docs suggest that it's possible to export a composite font definition from Illustrator and import it into the Japanese version of InDesign, but I haven't figured out how to get that to work with World Tools Pro, either.
