I cannot for the life of me get a running header to show on my pages. I have followed your 4 steps from page 15 of the documentation but to no avail. I have even tried on a totally fresh document incase there was somehting weird with my working file, but still it just shows blank frames on my pages. I am using CS5 and i would say i was definielty an advanced user so i'm totally baffled! I feel i am missing something so simple, but just can't see what it could be! I could understand if i was trying to set a 'complicated' header up, but I am just trying to set a simple header from your default options. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to say without seeing your document, but the #1 reason headers don't show up is for the simple reason the source text is too short.

Power Headers has a default minimum story size of 100 characters. If your story is shorter than that, the header will not appear -- unless you make the minimum size smaller. Setting it to 0 effectively turns off the feature.

Could this be your problem?

Thanks for your quick response!

When i read your possible solution i thought it sounded like the reason but it still didn't work. I understand how diffulcult it is without seeing the document but i have even tried with a brand new document, pasting in some text copy, defining a paragraph of text which i want as my running header (e.g. article title) and then gone to the master page and followed your 4 simple steps and then applied 'update document headers', but nothing happens! One thing i noticed is that after you define a frame as a label on a master, it then becomes moveable throughout any page, is this the correct behaviour? I always thought any items on the master pages were not selectable unless overridden?

I really feel there is such a simple solution but i cannot put my finger on it.

Thanks!

When Power Headers updated headers the master frames are overridden.

You can send me your document and I'll take a look at it.

I don't believe it but it just worked! I didn't realise i had to type some text into my header text frame on the master page first. As i understood it from the documentation you only needed to select the text frame on the master page (like you would if you were using ID's standard running variable).

Jusy out of curiosity, why do the header frames all get overridden? Is it the only way to make the plugin work correctly? I would have thought otherwise it was better to not have them overridden, or am i missing the point?

Thanks so much for your help!

To insert a header variable, you should right click and select the variable you want to insert.

The reason the header needs to be overriden is mostly because the header text is "real" text as opposed to "variable" text. It's a bit of a double edged sword...

Thanks again!
